Boehner's Health care speech

Last night the house passed the health care reform bill. Before they did minority leader and next speaker of the house John Boehner made a powerful and emotional speech.

I thought it would be good for you all to hear.

Does he disagree w/ the entire bill? Does he think people should be denied coverage because of a preexisting condition or that it is o.k. for insurance companies to drop you while you are ill.

I wish he would identify the specific elements he *does* agree with as well as the specific elements he does *not* agree with. If the minority party would do this, I would take them much more seriously.

You want the minority to say specifics about what is bad and good about this bill?

Well I think they have several times.

But as the spokesperson for the Conservative side I will say it again. Sadly I don't have the time or the text to say them all but I will hit some of the highlights.

1. A Massive tax increase on a huge number of Americans.

2. The government will FORCE you to buy a product. This is insulting and a disturbing encroachment into our freedom.

3. I think the most horrifying one, maybe it should but number one but I'm to lazy to change it... any way... please see the earlier post about Ronald Reagan. He can say it better then me. but I can try. This bill is a symbolic "foot in the door" for socialism in America. This will not be the end of this. They will not stop here.

4. I am running out of time, but here is one more. The process is horrible, filled with back-room deals and almost certainly bribery

backroom deals that take placed on TV? And why is this socialism but, say, the fire department isn't?

With all due respect, it seems to me that you are just repeating the GOP talking points without any explanation or reason. Socialism is a great buzz word, but it seems like it is being used an awful lot.

Bribery? Come on, man! Just because you don't like something doesn't mean that it is evil or anti-American or unconstitutional.

Also, you didn't say what elements of the bill you didn't like other than the mandate. Are you in favor companies being able to deny children, like my little sister, health care because of preexisting conditions? Are you against people being able to stay on their parent's plan a couple of years longer?

Again with all due respect, you never answered JMD's questions and in fact sort of proved her point.

Ok. you asked what I DO like about the bill... well in my first comment I didn't say anything about that for a reason.

JMD asked what specific things i liked about it, and that got me thinking, "what do I like about the bill?" and, off the top of my head, I couldn't think of any. But its a 2074 page bill, now law, there has to be something that i can agree on. I am doing some research on the bill for things i can agree on, if you guys have any suggestions i would be happy to hear them,

And for back room deals..... Well lets use the example of "Gator Aid" this is a special deal for Florida that gives them a huge amount of money for there Representative's vote. that wasn't on camera

As for bribery, maybe not in cash, but I for one am certain that bribery was involved in the passage of this bill.

and for Socialism, are you asking what is bad about it or are you just saying it is worn out? because if your asking the first question, then we need to have a different discussion.....

And for the last thing, the 2 things you have said about preexisting conditions and staying on your parents plan, well i think that should not be part of the bill. that is not the governments job to tell a business it has to sell its product to a that person. I am against that being in the bill.

and for being on your parents plan. i have nothing against a kid doing that, but its not the governments job to make sure he can. staying on your parents plan for an extra few years is not a right.

if there is anything i missed please tell me and i will address it

Okay. I'll keep this brief. Why is this bill socialism but the fire department is not? What makes health care something a company should control without government intervention but the fire department is something the government should run?

Second, The Constitution says that it was created because they wanted to "promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity" I would say that health care is part of the General Welfare.

Third, yes there were backroom deals, but there are always backroom deals in politics.

It seems to me that the republicans are just pouting because you guys lost.

Let me just say first that i respect your opinion and mean no disrespect with my other posts. I read them again and I could see how they could be interpreted in a way i didnt mean. its hard to transmit tone of voice through the internet.

Any way...

First that fire department thing. What i believe is a good answer to that is very hard to put into words. so i will try to think of a good way in the coming days but right now i dont what to say thing i dont mean if you know what i mean.

For your second point, you think Health care is a right i don't, that is the fundamental difference. I think you are interpreting the constitution wrong, and the founders intent wrong, but thats a different issue

Third, yes often there are back room deals, but the volume of them is staggering and that is a large part of what the president ran on.

Fourth, Yes the dems won the battle, but in doing so they awoke a sleeping giant, the silent majority has arisen. and come November your party and your ideology will wee that America is will be a center right country. yes we lost the battle, but this is like Pearl Harbor.

Hmmm... I don't agree with Alex regarding a "silent majority"

I'll say this: I don't believe that the majority of Americans are actually on the right--- I believe that most people would be more center of the road; and that there is a small minority (relatively speaking) who are actually so far right.

Sure, they're 'loud' and fairly well-organized... and hey-- at least they know where they stand and what they believe (-: But, as far as being the majority-- I don't agree.

meaning no disrespect, but if you guys are in the majority why did you lose the senate, the House, the Presidency and a bunch of Governors?
