"As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It's Alaska."
--Sarah Palin
I am currently reading her book so you can look forward to some rants in the near future.

This is true. The first place the Russians would hit would be Alaska. Not because it is important, but simple because its closer.
Well, as much as I think Palin is irrelevant in the National discussion...Alex/Palin is probably correct....Russia would probably hit Alaska first...closest ....
I look forward to hearing what you get out of the book. I have a sick curiosity to read this book too. Been looking for liberal commentary on their view of this one...

No they wouldn't. Alaska poses no strategic or military importance. It is also isolated from the continental U.S. So Russis would have to invade Canada to get to the U.S.
It would take so long to take Alaska that the U.S. would be able to counter attack by the time they had taken Alaska. They would want to hit us hard to begin with. Alaska would be a waste of their time.
That's just what I was thinking.
Even thought lots of people say "Canada? Canada never does anything," I'm sure they're much better than that. Invading both countries would be a pain.
Rants? Rants tend to be interesting. :)
I am afraid I have to disagree with Alex, and agree with rock4ever95, if Russia was to attack the United States, regardless of Alaska's relatively close proximity, they would attempt to fire missiles at a major city. Attacking Alaska would be like the proverbial poking the giant with a twig, it will make the giant quite mad but wouldn't cripple or disorient him. In addition, with missile technology today Russia could, although it would have a much larger chance of failing, just as well fire a long-range missile the long way around the earth to the U.S.'s east coast...
Well if they were going to have a land invasion, then I don't know what they would do, but they would not invade.
In the cold war the main threat was lots and lots and lots of nukes fired from long range Siberian missile silos, and underwater arctic nuclear submarines.
The Russians and Americans both had enough nukes to destroy the world. Twice. So they would not have to be stingy with there missiles. And Ben is right. They would shoot missiles at every city in America with a population of over a few thousand.
Alaska has many cities with a population of up to 300,000 in Anchorage. Russia would nuke manly the continental US but some would hit Alaska, and these missiles would hit first, because Alaska is much closer to Russia.
