How To Fix Congress

Congress, poor congress sometimes you just have to feel sorry for them. I mean of the three branches they really do the most work, get very little credit, and take most of the blame. Currently they have a 22% approval rating so I thought that now would be a good time to talk about How To Fix Congress(I bet you guessed I was going to say that).

So here is how I would reform Congress, keep the Senate the way it is(Two Senators per state) and get rid of the House of Representatives and replace it with the new and improved House of Representatives(the House of Representatives Beta is you will). What will happen every two years is that people go and vote for their senator(if one is up for reelection) and for which party they like the best.

Then the total votes for each party is tallied and they assign the seats in this way: Let's say that the Republicans got 45%, The Democrats got 52%, The Libertarians got 2%, and the Green Party got 1% then the Republicans get 180 seats that they can fill with whoever won their primaries, The Democrats get 208 seats that they can fill with whoever won their primaries, the Libertarians get 8 seats which they can fill with....... you guessed it! whoever won their primaries, and the Green Party get 4 seats which they can fill with whoever won their primaries.

There would be about 400 seats in The House of Representatives and they would be assigned proportionally. The only problem that I can see is what would happen to those who got less than 1% of the vote, I think that there would probably have to be a law that says that if you get less than .25% of the vote you don't get a seat.

This new system would both give third parties a chance and give those running against incumbents a fair chance. Also coalitions would need to form enhancing bipartisanship.

So Charlie Christ decided to run as a traitor, whoops sorry I mean independent this week because the political system of Florida is broken. How does Mr. Christ know this? Because he fell behind in the polls.

I would actually like to introduce a new feature on this blog, called the Liberal Rocker Endorses. So in the Florida Senate Race, The Liberal Rocker Endorses, drumroll please, Charlie Christ! Yes Charlie Christ of the backstabbing liar party. Why? Because I think that the Republicans need their own Joe Lieberman, an independent who sort of agrees with them but totally disagrees with them on other issues and votes with the other party.

For years John McCain's thing is that he's a maverick and that he wasn't elected "Miss Congeniality", now apparently he never said that. John, what's going on in that mind of yours?

Census are being mailed out and filled out this week so I decided to give you, surprise, a few words on sampling and the census along with some ideas for the 2020 census. So here we go.

While there are undeniable flaws in the Census system we have now, I don't think that sampling is a fair solution. I do not say that for political reasons, on the contrary my political party would be helped by sampling, I just have this crazy idea that when you count you should start at one, go to two, and then to three, and so on. I believe that no matter the expense we should make sure that everyone is counted. The government needs to reach out to leaders in the minority communities to help with getting minorities counted.


When you think about it there is really no reason why the census should cost 2.6 Billion Dollars. I mean basically you're(yes I know I'm talking directly to the government while before I wasn't, deal with it) mailing a ton of letters. I mean, come on, you guys own the post office can't you say to your employees “ don't charge us for these. We pay your salary after all.”? The government paying for postage is like a restaurant owner having to pay for dinner. It's crazy.

You could also probably find High School or College kids to volunteer or work minimum wage ringing doorbells or reading the letters or whatever it is census workers do. Then you get a paper company to donate paper for you, they can put in their commercials “Official paper of the U.S. Senate.” and find an ink company to donate the ink. So basically you're not paying for postage, paper, ink, or help. So it won't have to cost 2.6 Billion anymore. While we're on the subject, how the heck did you manage to spend 2.6 Billion Dollars. That is, and I worked it out on a calculator, $118.308,879,863 for every person in the united states. Surely paper and ink and postage couldn't have cost that much. Now that you don't have to spend 118 bucks per person you can put more money into making sure that minorities are counted and that people aren't counted twice. Now that I've brought it up I just wanted to ask how did you manage to count people twice. I mean it's kind of hard to do it accidentally.

The Supreme Court ruled that sampling was unconstitutional and I don't see any need to stir up trouble, resentment and anger over something that will become unnecessary if we are able to make the current system cost effective and able to count everyone.

Scott Brown Wins Mass. Senate Seat!

GOP nominee Scott Brown has won the hotly contested Massachusetts senate seat. With a final tally of Scott Brown 52% and the Democrat, Martha Coakley, 47%. This is a monumental upset because 2 months ago saying a republican could win in the fortress of Liberalism was unthinkable. Yet very soon Scott Brown, a conservative republican, is going to be sworn in as Massachusetts's senator. This race captured national attention for another reason, Scott Brown repeatedly promised to be the 41 vote against the health care reform bill. That would brake the 60 vote super majority, allowing a republican filibuster. Many have said that this is the end of health care reform. The independent candidate Joe Kennedy received 1% of the vote. Joe Kennedy had no relation to the previous seat holder.

Health Care Debate Down to the Wire in Senate

Today marks the end of the last full week until the end of year break for our congress, but they still have a lot to talk about it seems. For months now our Congress has wanted to pass some form of health care reform before the end of the year, yet it is coming down to the wire. After the bill got through in the house with 220 to 215 vote we learned it would be a hard fight, no matter what side of the debate you are on. Now with the public option gone the Dems. have 59 votes. One away from the 60 they need to close the debate and pass health care reform. All eyes are on one Democrat holdout (shown above) senator Ben Nelson from Nebraska. Easily the most conservative Democrat in the senate, he has refused to vote for the bill until stronger abortion restrictions are implemented and all payment of abortion by taxpayers is taken out of the bill. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and President Barack Hussein Obama have both been speaking with Senator Nelson and discussing his possible support.

Last week marked an important week for health care reform. Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut stated that he would no longer support health care until the "public option" was removed. With few other options, the Dems had to drop the long debated public option.

Throughout this debate Republicans, led by Senator John McCain and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, have been doing all they can to pass amendments, slow the debate, and in any way possible stop health care reform.

Now with little time and not enough votes will the bill still be passed by Christmas as proposed? Without a public option and after many compromises the bill is a shadow of its former self, but will Dems. in Congress be able to get even this through? We will soon see. For now it seems Ben Nelson is key to all of this.

God No!!

So like many people I am shocked and outraged at President Obama. He's taking so long to decide how many young Americans we are going to send off to fight and die in a foreign country. How Dare He?! How Dare He Think About An Issue Such As This?! How Dare He Deliberate?! How Dare He Discuss This Issue With, I don't know, Experts?!

We didn't see President Bush do this, and we all know how well he ran the country. There were no problems during his term. And that was because he didn't bother to talk to any people who, you know, know anything about the issue. He just made a decision and acted on it, no matter what the facts were.

And that worked out so well.

Obama should take a page out of President Bush's playbook and just make a decision that will affect the country for decades to come on the spur of the moment. How Could That Possibly Go Wrong?

Do Not Mess With The Constitution

So today CNN.com reported that several Republican senators are sponsoring a constitutional amendment that will limit Senators to two terms each and Representatives to three terms each. I personally think this is a terrible idea. The Constitution does not say anything about term limits, and quite frankly I don't see the point. I think the 22nd Amendment is a little silly, why should a President only serve two terms? It was working perfectly fine in the years before that.

But, I think that this proposed Amendment is just totally pointless. Has the Senate been working so poorly that this Amendment is being demanded by the people? Are the people who have served for years in the Senate the worst members of that body? The answer to both these is, of course, no. Ted Kennedy, who is considered by both Republicans and Democrats to be one of the best Senators ever, served for 47 years.

The best part of this whole ludicrous story is that one of the co-sponsors of the bill is Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, who is a strong support of a Senator only serving two terms, and just happens to be in the middle of her third term. Can we say hypocrisy ladies and gentlemen? Her spokesman, who is probably trying to get on Jon Stewart, made this statement

"Throughout her career she has fought for term limits and continues to do so, and that is why she is co-sponsoring this bill, But until it is passed, it would do a disservice to Texas and the people of Texas to do away with the seniority she has gained, unless all the states and all of the senators hold themselves to the same standard."

So, she is for term limits, except when she's against them. Incidentally Sen. Hutchison is expected to resign her seat next year to run for Governor of Texas. So this bill won't impact her.


This is a bad idea that seems to serve no purpose. The long serving Senators and Representatives are normally the best. If the people don't like their Congresspeople, they will vote them out of office. That this crazy new idea known as, oh what's the word...Oh yes, DEMOCRACY!! Stop messing with the Constitution.

Anarchy in the U.S.

So I was thinking about how Olympia Snowe was being criticized for having to much power in the health care debate and people were saying that Max Baucus should not have tried to negotiate with Republicans, and I thought, you know, we are total hypocrites.

When the Republicans are in power we complain about how they don't let us have a voice, but if a Democrat does negotiate with them he or she becomes a traitor. Then once we're in power we complain that they are the party of "No", but if anyone dares to negotiate with them they become traitors.

We need to get our act together, and stop acting like Republicans. We need to negotiate and, God forbid, compromise. I have found that if you are nice to someone and listen to what they have to say they will have more respect for you, and respect is very important when you have to negotiate with people every day.

How much respect do you think Alan "Die Quickly" Grayson has right now? How much respect does Joe "You Lie" Wilson have? None, and how well can they do their jobs when they have become little more than national jokes?

I think that it is time to restore civility and reason on the hill (Hey I think I see a book title in that somewhere). Also, I think we need to realize that since the beginning of this nation we have had differing opinions, and just because they might be differing opinions does not make either of them anti-American. I think that it is very very egotistical to think that only your opinion is Pro-American.

And that's the way it is.

A rant to end all rants

Yesterday, Nancy Pelosi said that the violent rhetoric coming from the republicans could be dangerous. She said that she had seen the outcome of violent rhetoric before, in the 70s with the assassination of Harvey Milk. Minority leader John Boehner responded by saying that America was in the middle of a revolution.

Now, I feel the need to remind Rep. Boehner something. The last time Americans rebelled 1,200,000 people died, half of them civilians. Are you that arrogant, Mr Boehner? Do you think that your opinions are worth the cost of over a million lives? When you carry signs that say "Let's bury Obamacare with Kennedy" and tee-shirts that say "Civil Liberty or civil war" how long do you think it will be before some nutcase decides to bury Obamacare with Kennedy. With a gun.

I can tell you this, Rep. Boehner, if there is a revolution, I know who goes up against the wall first. I know who's door I will kick down first. Do you think history will thank you for this? Do you think history will even remember you? You have the choice to be remembered as the brave conservative who worked with the Liberal President for the good of the country. Please choose that Rep. Boehner, be remembered as a hero and not a villain.

Just to clear this up, I do not want to shoot Mr. Boehner I was just making a point that the public will not thank him if he starts a revolution. I would never kick down his door and shoot him. No matter how much of an uninformed idiot he is.

Do not censure Joe Wilson

I know that the title might catch you by surprise, but I am against censuring Rep. Wilson. To quote Barney Frank, a Democrat of Massachusetts, “I think it’s bad precedent to put us in charge of deciding whether people act like jerks,”

Rep. Wilson crossed the line, but instead of refuting what he actually said, which is untrue, the Democrats are focusing on how he said it. They saw on opportunity to hit the Republicans. However, the could have hit them harder if they went on the talk shows and criticized what he said, not how he said it.

The American Public is not stupid, they know that jumping up and yelling at the President is unacceptable, what they might not know is that the Health Care Plan does not cover Vulcans, Klingons, or any other type of alien. The Democrats need to tell them that.

I have not heard a single Congressman say that Joe Wilson was wrong. Keith Obermann did, Rachel Maddow did, but no elected official did. So it looks to the average uninformed American that Joe Wilson was totally right in what he said, but not in the way he said it.

That's not okay. Make the Republicans apologize for Wilson's actions and hit them hard on the actual information behind the outburst. Also, the pundits should stop crying racism at Joe Wilson. It has gotten so that anyone who criticizes the President is a racist, that is just silly.

Joe Wilson would have shouted at Joe Biden if he were President, and if Hillary Clinton was president Wilson would have shouted at her as well. He is just a man who has no respect for people who disagree with him. He is not racist, or at least we can't assume he is racist just because he shouted "You Lie"at the President.

Rest In Peace, Teddy Kennedy

Late last night, Ted Kennedy,, one of the greatest U.S. Senators in American History, died after a yearlong struggle with cancer. There is a strange irony that the other two Kennedy brothers died from an assassin's bullet but the youngest died from cancer.

Pres. Obama released a statement calling Sen. Kennedy the greatest senator of all time, and he certainly has a strong argument. Teddy helped pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act and the 1993 Family and Medical Leave Act. Sen. Kennedy's personal life was plagued by tragedy, two of his brothers were murdered, another brother and sister died in a plane crash, one of his sisters was born with mild mental retardation but was but in a mental hospital after a lobotomy went wrong, another of his sisters was killed in a plain crash. One of his sons lost a leg to cancer, and his daughter also survived cancer.

He lost his 1980 presidential campaign because he fled the scene of an accident while a woman who was in the car died. He claimed that he tried several times to save the woman, who was in the car that was in a river, before being forced to return to land. He asked for help from some friends, but he did not contact the police.

When we look back at Mr. Kennedy's career we will not remember the faults in his character, but as one of the greatest American politicians of all time. Rest in Peace and God Bless You Senator Kennedy, we will miss you.

Public Option, Option people

The Far-Right Crazies, or as I like to call them the Sith, keep yelling about how a Public Option will destroy our country. They say it would give the Big-Bad Government control over our health. However the Sith are missing one key problem with their agrument, the name of the Public Option. It has option in the freaking title!!!

The government won't take over your health care unless you choose to let them! You can still have your old health care if you want!! Sometimes I think that the Sith just ignore the facts. Why would you be agaienst giving people the option to do things?

So Mr. President, don't give an inch. To quote the Boss, "Well, we made a promise we swore we'd always remember, No retreat, baby, no surrender,Like soldiers in the winter's night,With a vow to defend, No retreat, baby, no surrender" We need a public option, Mr. President, and you are the president to do it.

Repeal it!!

For 16 years we have had the so called "don't ask don't tell" policy in place. This policy is based on the theory that a soldier's personal views and background can make them unable to preform their job. I find this ridicules in the extreme. A gay soldier can serve and give their life for their country just as easily and willingly as a straight soldier.

America is the most powerful country in the world, yet we still can't seem to get or act together on civil rights. If there was a country that refused to allow blacks to serve in the military we would be up in arms over it. In this world today there is no space for discrimination.

There is not argument that I have heard for "Don't ask Don't tell" that makes any kind of logical sense. One of my favourite reasons for not repealing "don't ask" is that the army is very conservative and the soldiers wouldn't be able to put up with gays. God forbid that a "conservative" institution be forced to have some diversity! Come on people! A trained soldier knows to put his personal biases behind him on the battlefield.

The worst that would happen is that homophobes wouldn't join the army, and that would not be a bad thing in my opinion. A person who is so closed-minded would not do well in the army where you have to deal with many kinds of people.

Repealing "Don't ask don't tell" would allow patriotic Americans to serve their country. We have been disabling ourself for 16 years and we need to stop. So I ask all those in government reading this, Repeal "Don't ask Don't Tell" strike a blow against discrimination.

the Supreme court

Oh goody! Just as American Idol ends and midway through year that Doctor Who is off the air we have a new entertainment series starting. We get the Supreme Court confirmation hearings, Yay!! I was a little disappointed with the last series as it was obvious that the guest star, Sam Alito, didn't know what he was talking about.

But now we'll be able to see all out old friends again. Pat Leahy will be starring again, and Jeff Sessions will be coming on as a costar. I'm a little disappointed that two of my favorite characters, Joe Biden and Ted Kennedy, will only have cameos, well maybe the new guest star will be more engaging then Alito.

I'm looking forward to the big fights, the discrimination charges against Alito really made that episode and it looks like we'll get it again accept bigger. It will also be fun to see the Republicans criticize her and then pull back so that they don't offended Hispanics.

My prediction for the final episode: It will turn out that Jeff Sessions is Sotomayor's secret lover and her husband, Arlen Spector, will shoot him. As Seessions dies he will reveal to Russ Feingold that Feingold is his son, and there is a twin brother. It will turn out that Dick Durbin is Feingold's twin. Then they will both kill Spector in revenge, and Feingold will turn evil and start murdering Congressmen. President Obama, Vice President Biden, and Speaker Pelosi will fight him and Speaker Pelosi will die during the battle. Biden will kill him and the series will end with the sun rising over the capitol building with all being peaceful.
